TEHERAN PARLEY

POSITION EXPLAINED TO SHAH REPORTED FRIENDLY DISCUSSION. IMPORTANCE OF STRATEGIC SAFEGUARDS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, August 27. Careful consideration is being given in London to the record of a conversation which took place yesterday in iTeheran between the Shah and the British Minister, who, with the Soviet Minister, had been specially summoned to discuss the reasons which led to the entry of British and Soviet forces into Iran. It was made clear to the Shah that Britain and Russia were determined to prevent the use of Iran by their enemy and that the measures now taken had become necessary in view of the unsatisfactory reply of the Iranian Government to the request for the removal of German nationals, who were a potential threat to the integrity of Iran and a possible nucleus of forces which could be used against the Allies.. No attempt was'made to disguise the formidable character of the military preparations Britain and Russia had undertaken, and there is reason to believe that the Shah fully realises their significance. It was once again emphasised that Britain had no quarrel with the Persian people and that the objectives in view were limited, but that the Allies were determined that they shall be fully attained and that the risk to Iran, which occupied such an important strategic position and possessed rich oil, must be removed. The discussion with the Shah is believed to have been friendly. The British Minister and his staff remain at Teheran. Sir Reader Bullard will be available for further consultations when desired.
