WAR LOAN

CALL FOR GOOD RESPONSE IN FINAL WEEK ADDRESS BY MINISTER OF FINANCE. SOME OF THE LARGER CONTRIBUTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “Though progress so far has been encouraging and nearly half of the £10,000,000 loan has been subscribed, there is still the opportunity —and the necessity —for a big final effort on the part of private citizens, companies, institutions, industrial organisations, local bodies and others to make the loan an outstanding success, worthy of the sacrifices our men are making in the Armed Forces,” said the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, in an address last night. The Government, said Mr Nash, had a balanced plan of war finance. Cther means of financing litis part ol the Dominion's war expenditure could be found, such as by increased taxation and issues of credit, but. for a balanced programme the Government considered that a voluntary contribution in a sound investment by the public and institutions with money to invest to the extent of £10,000,000 was not unreasonable to expect. Provision, he recalled, was made in the Budget for borrowing in Now Zealand in the current year the sum of £13,000,000 for war, £3,000,000 of which it was estimated would come through the national savings scheme from the regular savings out of income and the remainder from persons and institutions with money and other assets that could be employed to forge the weapons of victory. Those who had already contributed sought no publicity, Mr Nash said he knew. He mentioned the following as only a few of the larger contributions: — £ A.M.P. Society 250.000 State Fire and Accident. Insurance 100,000 New Zealand Insurance Co. 100,000 Australasian T. and G. Society 100,000 Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Co 75,000 National Mutual Life Association of Australasia 75,000 Government Life Insurance .... 50.000 Norwich Union Life Insurance Society 50.000 Third Party Motor Pool 150,000 Union Steam Ship Company 50.000 “This war is often referred to as ‘total warfare,' ” concluded Mr Nash. "Every energy and every asset we have must be thrown into the conflict. You can help if you make sure that any funds you command are placed at the service of the State for war purposes now. Your contribution will save your business, your trades union, your property, your home, your children, your liberty and the British Commonwealth.”
