CARTERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION GARDEN CIRCLE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs P. Hodder presided over a meeting, of the Women's Division Garden Circle held in the P. and A. rooms. Carterton. There were also present’ Mesdames H. Abbott (treasurer), ’ G. Couper (secretary), T. McKenzie. L. R. Maitland, W. George, E. W. Allen, J. Warrington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. E. Crdish and J. Archer. It was- resolved that money received from the flower and vegetable shows be deposited in the Garden Circle Post Office account until the sum of £lO was obtained, when £5 will then be withdrawn and placed to the Building Fund account. The autumn show was discussed and it was decided that 25 classes be staged with an entry fee of 3d for each exhibit. It was resolved that the show be held on Friday, October 3, and entries will close with the secretary on Thursday, October 2. Exhibits are to be staged by 11.30 a.m. on Octo'ber 3. Mrs A. F. Pink is to be asked to judge the exhibits. Mrs P. Hodder has donated the points prize and Mrs Allen that for the runner up.

BOY SCOUTS

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

A meeting of the citizen’s committee of the Carterton Boy Scouts was held last evening, Mr C. E. White presiding. There were also present Mesdames M. E. Mellish, A. Thompson, D. Walsh, Misses Eagle, Herdman and Messrs Fairbrother, Patterson, DeLacey, Ray and Clapp. The resignation of JVIr White as chairman and as a member of the committee was received with regret and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for .his services to the scout movement. The Scoutmaster also thanked Mr White for the assistance given to him since he had taken over the troop. It was reported that the boys had worked hard and had made a profit of £8 10s in connection with the sale of a bag of sugar. After discussion concerning the alteration and renovation of the scout den it was resolved that a further meeting be held on Thursday, September 4, to go more fully into the question of the building and that the assistance of a builder be sought in the matter of advice. I WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE INCREASE IN DRILL CLASS NUMBERS. A committee meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday, there being present Mesdames H. K Ordish (in the chair), W. H. Hall, A. Fj'Pink, Miss 0. W. Wolters, and the secretary. The president announced that Miss Kitchen would give a series of lectures in connection with canteen work, the •first of which is to be held in the P. and A. Rooms on Tuesday, September 9. Miss Berrill reported that as the average attendance at the drill classes was from 20 to 25 the Band Room was not large enough, so the State Theatre was being utilised. Misses M. Dunn and M. Reid were taking extra lessons in order to qualify as instructresses, while Dr Morton was conducting the First Aid lectures. Mr C. K. Goodin had given four very interesting and instructive lectures on “road repairs” to the cycling corps. Mr P. Beere will give a “Safety First” lecture, together with a screening of lantern slides, at the Band Room at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday. It is hoped that local gardeners who have spare ground will utilise it to grow extra vegetables, which will be much appreciated at the camps. Personal Items. Pte. Peter Bond, who has been in the Pacific islands, returned to Carterton yesterday. Pte. Mackie, who also returned, is in Auckland and will return to Carterton shortly. Miss Beverley Hooper, a very popular member of the teaching staff of the Carterton District High School, was entertained at afternoon tea by the staff of the school prior to severing her connection with the school. The headmaster, Mr W. Martin, and Miss Skelley made speeches, wishing her the best of luck in her new position at the Opunake -Public School. Miss Hooper was the recipient of a lovelj 7 bouquet. -Enthusiastic Send-off. At the Carterton railway station yesterday afternoon a large crowd farewelled local soldiers who had been on leave. Articles for Prisoners of War. There is on view in a window in Krahagen's building many useful articles which are to be sent by next-of-kin to New Zealand prisoners of war in Germany and other prison camps. These articles will be forwarded through the headquarters of the Red Cross Society. Women’s Division & Scout Concert. Tickets are selling freely for the W.D.F.U. and Scout Concert to be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton. on Wednesday night. The members of the Social Club of the W.D.F.U. have generously given their services in aid of the scout movement. The proceeds of the concert are to be used for the purpose of improving the Scout Den. Besides scout purposes the building, when properly finished, Will be used for holding scout card tournaments, etc. It is hoped parents of the boys and the public generally will attend in large

numbers tomorrow evening and show their appreciation. A first class programme has been arranged. The prices of admission are Is 6d and Is, with hall: price for children. A full dress rehearsal was hold by members of the Women’s Division who will take part in the concert.
