SPEEDY ACTION
IN ASSISTING RUSSIA ADVOCATED VIGOROUSLY IN BRITAIN. NEGLECT OF OPPORTUNITY ALLEGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. August 24. Comment on the Russian situation has led to general recognition that Britain must do something immediately to assist the Soviet. Sunday newspapers in London clamour for action. Mr John Gordon, writing in the “Sunday Express" says: "I hear all' sorts of excuses why. after two years of war in which we have poured out money, called up millions of men, and driven the factories as never before, we cannot strike a blow with which to take the pressure from Russia, but none of these excuses scelns adeuate. Can you believe that the British Empire is in such a condition that it cannot face such a fight? “The plain truth is that we are in a state of semi-pa|sy because, first of all, we have not got down to making a plan for winning the war. We think too much about defence and too little about offence, which is the only way to victory. Secondly, we seem unwilling to realise that we cannot win the war unless we get to grips with Hitler.” The ' “Sunday Times” say: “The Russian campaign has grown markedly worse in the past week. Arc we satisfied that the utmost is being done to assist Russia?” “Reynold's News” calls for readjustment of Britain's grand strategy in order to open up a second front against Germany.
