NAZIS IN PARIS
ORDERED TO CARRY - ARMS SHOOTING OF HOSTAGES THREATENED. SABOTAGE GROWING ' IN HOLLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, August 25. All German officers in Paris have been ordered to carry revolvers outside their uniforms, and the soldiers are similarly directed to carry bayonets. This order has been given by the German commander, General von Schaumburg, who has threatened that increased criminal acts will .be followed by shooting of hostages in proportion to the gravity of the crime. Ten thousand people were arrested last week in Paris working-class districts. Sabotage is growing in Holland, where anti-Nazis at night dynamite canal bridges. It is generally expected that the unrest will increase in the winter following food and fuel shortages and as a result of the intolerable forced labour conditions. Commentators say that Europe’s cauldron of hatred against the Germans continues to simmer, but it would be unwise to expect an early boil-over and the instances quoted should not lead to an impression that the moment for revolution is at hand. Drawbacks to a spontaneous revolt are lack of leadership and difficulties of organising the unarmed people under the enemy’s constant surveillance.
