BUTCHERS FINED
TOO MUCH PRESERVATIVE.
USED IN MAKING SAUSAGES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 22. Six butchers were fined by Mr Levien, S.M., for having sold sausages containing more than the allowed quantity of preservative. The offences in every case were admitted. Senior Sergeant Joyce, prosecuting the Auckland Meat Company, Ltd., said sausages had been sold containing 0.3 grains of sulphur dioxide in place of the 3.5 grains allowed by the Health Department.
•? e °P Ie are becoming apprehensive that they are not getting goods in the condition they should get them,” the Magistrate said, in imposing a fine of £2 with costs.
On behalf of the defendant company it was submitted that the surplus was oue to carelessness on the part of an employee and also to the fact that the preservative was difficult to obtain and uneven in strength. A fine of £4 was imposed on Sid Day for having sold sausages with 15 4 grains of sulphur dioxide. Leonaid Fearon was fined £2, the amount of preservative being 4.9 grains. Similar fines were imposed on Robert Hardman and George Knight. Alfred Zenevich was fined £3 for having sold sausages with 7.2 grains of sulphur dioxide per lb added.
