WAR PRISONERS
« SUPPLY OF FOOD PARCELS INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS ACTION. ESTABLISHMENT OF RESERVE AT GENEVA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) RUGBY, August 22. To ensure that in the event of a transport breakdown between Britain and Geneva, every British prisoner in enemy or occupied countries will continue to receive one food parcel weekly, 750,000 food parcels have been stored at the headquarters of the International Red Cross at Geneva.
To create this store, in addition to supplying each prisoner with a weekly parcel, approximately 50,000 parcels weekly have been packed at Red Cross depots in Britain. Canada has sent 12,500 parcels weekly, and Australia 5000 parcels, each weighing ten pounds, and containing tea, sugar, dried milk, canned foods, biscuits, chocolates, and fifty cigarettes.
The parcels go by steamer to Lisbon. The Canadian Prime Minister (Mr Mackenzie King) saw Lord Woolton (Food Minister), and discussed measures to enable Canada further to'help Britain in the supply of foodstuffs.
