ISLAND GROUP

SEVENTY MILES DISTANT FROM PHILIPPINES

MAPPED AS JAPANESE POSSESSION.

UNITED STATES CONCERN

i By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEV, 7 YORK, August 21. 'l'llo Tok io cor re,spoil dent of the “New York Times'' says that much interest has been aroused in diplomatic ipiarters by new Japanese maps which are being sold on the bookstalls. These show as a new Japanese possession a whole group of islands and coral reefs, extending from the Spratley Islands, in the west, to Half Moon Beef, 70 Hides from Palawan Island in Hie Philippines.

The group of islands and reefs, which have English names on old maps, now have a Japanese name,

"Shirman Gonto." or the "New Southern Islands."

The Secretary of State, Mr Hull, referring to the report, said the United States Government would view such annexation with concern.

The Japanese move against the Spratley Islands was reported in 1939 and was viewed with some misgivings at the time. Japanese maps now indicate an extension of the annexations.
