PRODUCTION OF GUNS

IN THE UNITED STATES

ALLEGATIONS BY SENATOR REFUTED.

PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT GIVES FACTS.

(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.23 a.m.) RUGBY. August 22.

President Roosevelt, according to a Press message, has refuted allegations by Senator Byrd, that the United States programme had a specific average of only four 90millimetre anti-aircraft guns monthly.

“In reality." said President Roosevelt, the programme required the delivery of 61 monthly and the War Department believed that quota would be achieved." The President stated that deliveries for July of 37-milimetre anti-tank guns, actually totalled 72, and added that 160 would be delivered in August, 280 in September and 320 in October, instead of only 15 per month, as Senator Byrd had declared. Regarding the 31-millimetre mortars, President Roosevelt said 221 were delivered in July and 340 would be delivered in August, while the number lor September would exceed 340, in contrast to the allegation of Senator Byrd that only 15 per month were scheduled.
