WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL GRANT MADE TO FIRE BRIGADE. A WATER COURSE PROBLEM. (“Times-Age” Special.) The meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was continued at Carterton after the “Times-Age” went to press yesterday afternoon. A letter was received requesting assistance in completing a military transport map for the Wairarapa South County giving details of roads, bridges and the larger culverts of the county. It was resolved that the County Engineer. Mr Pavitt, and the Overseer, Mr J. A. Wallace, supply the required details.
A complaint was received from Mr W. Rayner, “The Cliffs," regarding the water race through his property. The water race overseer also wrote regarding Mr Rayner's grievance. After consideration it was resolved that the county chairman (Mr Court), and Cr. D. McGregor confer with Mr Rayner and inspect the race referred to.
It was resolved to make a grant to the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Councillors remarking that it was for a worthy purpose. Mr Mitchell, of Longbush, waited upon the council regarding the cleaning of a water course at his property and asking for permission to make three cuts so as to obviate the clearing of 22 chains of willows. He felt that if he were allowed to do this it would greatly assist his work and would do away with excessive flooding. It was pointed out there were seven settlers concerned in the matter and that perhaps it would be better if the settlers inerested Were to meet and discuss the best method of dealing with the drain. It was decided that a meeting be held on Thursday, August 28, at the Longbush School, the clerk to circularise the interested settlers, and that Councillors F. Court and D. McGregor attend the meeting and explain the position in regard to the drain.
It was resolved on the request of the Carterton Racing Club to advertise that no parking of cars would be allowed on the eastern side of Chester Road during the annual race meeting at Clareville on September 13. Mr Keenan, Power Board Engineer, wrote submitting particulars of the installation of a motor driven pump to serve stock holding paddocks on the East Coast road. After discussion Cr. Cameron moved, and Cr. A. McGregor seconded, that the work be carried out by the Power Board at the estimated cost. The motion was carried.
Cr. McGregor reported that a flood light had been placed on an electric pole near the Gladstone store to enable the Home Guard to use the road for drill purposes. It would be a much better light if a reflector were attached to it.
The Clerk reported that a cut of 15 per cent of petrol had been notified which would mean that only 969 gallons per month would be available. It would be impossible to operate with this amount and to keep the roads in good order and safe for traffic. Cr. D. McGregor: “We definitely can’t cut down on our work on the roads. If the county were compelled to work on less petrol, then it. would seriously have to consider the installation of gas tanks on the county trucks.” It was resolved that the bull-dozer be used in the river bed at the bulge near the Carrington cheese factory to give the water a clear passage under the bridge and obviate the danger to the bridge by flood erosion. Concerning the erosion that had taken place in the Kawhata River, Cr. A. McGregor and the Overseer were requested to make an inspection, with power to act. The County Overseer reported, inter alia, concerning the Maungaraki Riding: —Practically the whole month has been taken up clearing slips. Metal has been graded in, slips cleared and watertables cleared on the Ponatahi, Miller's and Longbush roads. A temporary bridge has been put in on Miller’s road. Slips have been cleared and metalling done on the Admiral road. Slips have been cleared on the Wainuioru Valley. Flat Point, Glenburn and Craigie Lea roads. A section of the Flat Point road on the Arawhata cutting is blocked. The road has subsided in three places, and the Glenburn hill is in a fairly bad state. Metalling has been done and slips cleared on the Kaiwhata road. There is a fairly bad erosion taking place in the Kaiwhata River, opposite the Power Station. The drop on the Te Kopi road has been filled in several times during the month.
