CARTERTON

SCOUT GATHERING SOLDIER MEMBER ENTERTAINED. ("Times-Age” Special.) Last evening a pleasant time was spent at the Band Room when Corporal' Neville Walsh was entertained by the Carterton Scout Committee and 1 friends. The programme consisted of / community singing, musical items and mystery tricks by Mr H. T. Ray. Supper was provided and much appreci- ' ated, after which a small toast list was- honoured. The toast of “The Guest .of the Evening,” Corporal Neville Walsh, was proposed by Mr C. E. White, who said that Corporal Walsh had been for a considerable period the faithful and energetic secretary to the Scout Committee in Carterton. He had' rendered yeoman service for the Scout movement. On behalf of the Scout Committee and his friends he asked Corporal Walsh to accept a hold-all. Corporal Walsh suitably replied. The health of Mr’ and Mrs Walsh was toasted with enthusiasm. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the League of Mothers was held in St. Andrew’s Church yesterday afternoon. Mrs R. H. Every (president) cordially welcomed the man}- members present.

The annual report and balance sheet were adopted, the latter showing a satisfactory credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs R. H. Every (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames G. Brown, Knox-Smith, J. L. Hunt (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs M. King (re-elected); secretary, Mrs F. L. Barr (re-elected); committee, Mesdames W. McPherson, W. Deller, C. K. Goodin, E. Williams, A. Ingley, W. Herdman, W. Gregor, H. T. Leete, G. Steffert, P. Beere and F. G. Bath; creche committee, Mrs H. T. Leete (convenor), Mesdames W. Gregor, C. K. Goodin, Woods, Gordon, Nightingale, Sadler, Daysh, Thompson and Keenan.

Mrs Foss gave the thought for the month: .“Give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you.”

The hint given by Mrs R. Thompson was: “Before planting green peas, soak them for 15 minutes in kerosene, and the birds will not touch the young seedlings.”

The president reminded members that Mrs L. J. Hunt would be sending another box of cakes to the Seamen’s Mission on Thursday. An appeal was made for old linen, flannelette, and sheeting for use at the local Red Cross Society’s room. Several members enrolled for the Home Nursing classes, which will comprise six one-hour lectures, and which are to be conducted by Mrs Marshall. Much interest was shown in the attractive, warm and useful garments that have been made and knitted for refugee children by six school girls— Barbara and Judith Knutson, Dora Hunt, Shirley Williams, Lorna Bambry and Anne Gregor. These children have met at Mrs L. Knutson’s home every Saturday afternoon, spending their leisure in this commendable way. The president welcomed Mrs J. R. Higgs, v.'ho gave an interesting address on “Contrasts between life in New Zealand and in Hong Kong.” On the motion of Mrs R. H. Every, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Higgs. Two items given by the choir were greatly appreciated.

Court (chairman) expressed his thanks to the councillors and the staff for having attended the memorial service in St. Mark's Church, Carterton, in connection with the death of Private Keith Townsend, a former employee of the South County Council. Mr L. Freddy, who has been the picture operator at the Regent Theatre for some time past, left Carterton this morning. He will later join the R.N.Z.A.F. Earthquake This Morning. A slight earthquake was felt in Carterton at 9.27 o'clock this morning. Boy Scout & W.D.F.U. Concert. On Wednesday next at the King's Theatre, Carterton, the Boy Scout Troop and members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Social Club will present a combined variety concert. Both the Scouts and members of the Social Club have been preparing for this concert during the past month and the programme to be rendered will be of a high standard. Tickets are selling freely and as a result the King's Theatre should be filled. Football. The Carterton senior team to play Greytown at Carterton tomorrow for
