“PUBLIC SCANDAL”

THE PRICE OF FRUIT MARKETING DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION. ATTACKED BY OPPOSITION MEMBERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.). WELLINGTON. This Day. Strong criticism of the handling of fruit by the Internal Marketing Department was voiced by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo) when the Marketing Department vote of £20,430 was under consideration in the/* House of Representatives today. Mr Broadfoot said the price of fruit, the quality and scarcity of it, was just a public scandal. He spoke of the high price of apples and pears at the present time and said it seemed to him that the consumer was the forgotten man.

Mr W. P. Endean. (Opposition, Remuera) said the troops in Egypt had to pay ten shillings a case for apples when these were plentiful in- New Zealand.

The Minister in Charge of the Department, Mr Barclay, said that if the War Cabinet had wanted the apples, they were available, but he emphasised the difficulties of shipping space and - refrigeration. The vote was passed and the House adjourned at 1 p.m.
