Mr “Mike” Collins, formerly on the staff of the Pahiatua branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is reported to be a prisoner of war. Mr S. L. P. Free, of Masterton. has been elected a member of the executive council of the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society. In the Trinity College examinations held in Wellington recently, Miss Beulah Hirst, of Masterton, was successful in passing her higher local theory examination in elocution. The condition of Mr F. H. Baker, chief cashier of John Burns and Co., who was injured by a fall while escaping from the fire in the firm's building at Auckland this week, is still serious.

The Hon H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, will open a new assembly hall at the Hawera Technical School this afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, as acting-Native Minister, he will open a Maori hostel in Hamilton.

The funeral of the late Mrs F. Marshall, which took place in Masterton yesterday, was largely attended. The Rev. H. S. Kings conducted a service at the residence and also at the graveside. Wreaths were sent by the Ladies’ Guild and Trustees of the Kuripuni Methodist Church and the members of the Masterton Master Butchers’ Association, besides many others from relatives and friends. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. Davies. R. Davies, L. Schroder, R. Maxted, L. Butcher and T. Attree.

Mr John Lane, who died recently at Whakatane, was one of the best-known residents of Palmerston North. He had lived there since 1874, the year he arrived in New Zealand with his mother, a brother, and a sister. Mr Lane became a contractor and carried on this' business till he was 72 years of age. He married Miss Ellen Leigh, daughter of Mr John Leigh,, in 1882. They had ten children, the eldest son dying about 1929. the remaining children being: Mesdames E. Woods (Whakatane), R. Hadfield (Palmerston North), and Messrs Frederick Lane, George Lane and Harry Lane (Auckland), Ernest Lane (Martinborough). Arthur Lane, Charles Lane, and Harold Lane (Palmerston North), Reference to the fact that his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, and Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, last week celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination, was made at the annual dinner of the St Patrick’s College Old Boys’ Association at which the Archbishop was one of the principal guests. Mr L. A. Chapman recalled that when the college first opened its doors on June 1, 1885, the roll numbered 19 boys, one of whom was now the Archbishop. Other old boys of the college were proud to congratulate him on the memorable anniversary which he had just celebrated, and they hoped he would be spared for many more years to continue the work he was so ably doing. The Catholic Church in New Zealand was fortunate in having such inspiring leadership in the present dark days.
