HADLOW SCHOOL

ANNUAL BOXING TOURNEY.

IMPROVEMENT IN GENERAL STANDARD.

There was a large number of parents and friends of the boys of Hadlow Preparatory School to witness the annual boxing tournament. The standard generally was high and all present thoroughly enjoyed the various bouts. Mr Jack Logan officiated as judge, Mr John Lawson as timekeeper, and Sergeant R. Hewitt and Mr R. Falloon as seconds.

At the conclusion of the boxing. Mr A. W. Don, Principal, thanked those present and expressed his pleasure to see their interest in the work of the school. He said he cordially appreciated the kindness of those who acted as officials for the tourney and was pleased to hear Mr Logan’s opinion that the standard had improved, adding that this was a generous tribute to the work of Mr R. Page, sports master. The results were—

Featherweight—First round: Maunsell beat Free, Lawson beat Poulton 11, Holmes beat Cameron. Lucock boat Maunsell. Semi-final: Lawson boat Maunsell, Lucock beat Holmes. Final: Lucock beat Lawson.

Lightweight.—First, round: Kronfeld I beat Ellingham, McMaster beat Kronfeld 11, Falloon a bye. Semi-final: McMaster beat Kronfeld I. Final: Falloon beat McMaster.

Middleweight—First round: Poulton I beat Humphries, Moore beat Jury. Final: Moore beat Poulton I.

Heavyweight: McGregor beat Tod. Special trophies. —Harold Beetham Cup, for winner of middleweight: M. Moore. Earle Riddiford Cup for most scientific boxer: Francis Lucock.

The judge said he had some difficulty in reaching his decision for the most scientific boxing and gave Falloon a second contest. He then made his award to Lucock.'

Francis Lucock is a small boy whose, parents’ home is in Taiping, in the Malay Peninsula. His parents are at present on furlough in Masterton. Francis Lucock was enrolled at the school on July 14 and. having previously done no boxing, has had only five weeks’ coaching. His success is therefore the more creditable.
