TOWN AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL HIRE OF MUNICIPAL NALLS. REBATE OF RENT REFUSED. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided. There were present Councillors W. White, A. D. Low, W. H. Judd, G. D. Wilson. R. Russell, H. E. Gardner, A. T. Jackson, G. W. Morice C. E. Grey and J. Ninnes. An apology for absence was received from Councillor W. Kemp. The Masterton branch of Woolworths (N.Z.) Ltd., applied for a rebate on the hire of the Municipal halls, used for a dance to raise money for comforts for their staff' members serving overseas.
It was decided to refuse the application, on account of the fact that the purpose for which the halls had been used was not for a patriotic purpose as defined by the Patriotic Purposes Regulations. “The objects of the function did not comply with the regulations, nor were they in fact, for patriotic purposes,” observed Councillor Wilson. Mr Jordan: “Quite right.”
It was decided to invite the business houses to close their premises at 12 o’clock on October 30 for the Carterton Show.
The Carterton Racing Club asked the council for a similar privilege on Septembebr 13, suggesting that busij ness houses be asked to close at 10 1 a.m. on race day. The request was refused.
Mrs E. F. Hayden applied for damages amounting to £2 14s on the grounds that she tripped and fell over a trench in Queen Street.
It was decided, on the recommendation of the works and finance committee, to pay the amount claimed. Messrs Robinson and Cunningham renewed their application for the preparation of an Urban Farm Lands List concerning clients’ properties in Johnston, Upper Renall and Cole streets and Colombo Road. It was agreed by the council that a prima facie case had not been macle out.
Mr Jordan said that a system of annual voting would obviate such a position arising.
The Commissioner of Transport forwarded a circular letter drawing attention to motor accidents at intersections and appealed for co-operation in effecting an improvement. The secretary, Local Government Loans Board advised that the board approved of the diversion of the unexpended balance of the Waterworks Improvement Loan for the purpose of lining other water mains within the borough subject to the necessary validating legislation. The Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O'Hara Smith, advised that steps had been taken to have a clause inserted in the Local Legislation Bill and that Mr J. Robertson, M.P.. had promised to give it his support when the matter came before the House. It was decided to call tenders for the lease of the council’s property at Mangaone. The Girl Guides’ Association was granted the use of the Municipal Hall for an hour on Friday evenings for physical culture classes.
