SEVERAL INJURED
AT BIG AUCKLAND FIRE.
TWO IN SERIOUS CONDITION.
Several people were injured at the fire in Messrs John Burns and Co’s, building, Auckland, yesterday morning.
The man who was rescued h v a telescopic ladder was Robert McWhirter, aged 44. traveller. He was suffering from acute bronchial distress, but recovered rapidly after treatment and his condition is not serious. Two others were admitted to hospital:— Francis Harold Baker, chief cashier, suffering from concussion and probable fracture of the base of the skull, unconscious and condition serious. He was injured when he fell from the veranda to the road after escaping from the building.
Miss Stella Young, burns on the face and hands, condition fairly serious. The following were treated in a casualty ward: Lewis Goldwater, cuts on the left hand; Thomas Farrow Hirst, contusions to the left elbow andshock; David Michael Claret, burns on the right hand; and Arthur Cooper, a small scalp wound. Four firemen from the central fire station also received injuries needing hospital treatment while fighting the fire. They were Messrs L. Abbott, T. Cooper, S. Irvine and H. Lunn. Altogether seven firemen were hurt m various degrees. _____
