A CARDIGAN
THAT LOOKS LIKE A JUMPER.
SOMETHING FOR KNITTERS.
Materials: Goz Patons’ Super Scotch fingering wool, 2-ply; two No. 10 and two No. 11 Beehive knitting needles, measured by the Beehive gauge; thirteen small buttons. Measurements: Width all round at underarm, 34 inches; length from top of shculder, 19 inches; length of sleeve from under-arm. 4 inches.
Tension: To get. these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce seven stitches to the inch over the rib on No. 10 needles. BACK. With No. 11 needles. cast on 93 stitches. Ist Row: p 3, * k 3, p 3; repeat from <! to end. 2nd Row: k 3, * p 3, k 3; repeat from * to end. Repeat Ist and 2nd rows again. stl*< Row: p 3, * (k 1. p 1. k 1) into each of next 3 stitches, p 3; repeat from * to end. 6th Row: k 3, :: p 9, k 3; repeat from ’* to end. 7th Row: p 3. * 9, p 3; repeat from * to end. Sth Row: As 6th. 9th Row: p 3, * (k 3 tog.) 3 times, p 3; repeat from to end. 10th Row: As 2nd. These 10 rows form the pattern. Repeat them until 4th row of 3rd pattern is done. Now change to No. 10 needles and continue in pattern, increasing at each end of every 10th row until there are 109 stitches. Work straight until 4th pattern row of 12th pattern is done.
Here shape armholes: Cast off 3 stitches at beginning of next 6 rows. Work straight until 15 patterns are clone. Cast off.
For back yoke, cast on 33 stitches on No. 10 needles and work in pattern as for back until 2nd row of 13th pattern is done. Cast off. RIGHT FRONT. With No. 11 needles, cast on 51 stitches and work until 4th row of 3rd pattern is done. Change to No. 10 needles and continue in pattern, increasing at side edge on every 10th row. When three full patterns are done, make pocket thus: — With right side facing (p 3, k 3) twice, p 3, cast off 21 (p 3, k 3) twice, p 3. Take a spare needle, cast on 21 stitches, and work 24 rows in stock-! ing-stitch. Next Row: On main work (k 3, p 3) twice, work in pattern along 21 pocket cliches, pattern to end. Work in pattern, increasing at side edge as before until there are 59 stitches. Work straight until 4th row of 12th pattern is done. Here shape armhole; cast off 3 stitches at beginning of next 3 alternate rows, side edge. Work straight until 15 patterns are done. Cast off. For yoke, cast on 21 stitches with No. 10 needles and work 20 rows in pattern.
Next Row: Cast on 12. Now work in pattern on these 33 stitches until 6 patterns are done. Cast off.
LEFT FRONT. Work la correspond with right front, reversing all shapings. SLEEVES. Cast on 81 stitches with No. 11 needles and work 3 patterns. Change to No. 10 needles and continue in pat-, tern until 4th row of sth pattern is done. Shape top by k 2 tog. at beginning of every row until 9 patterns have been worked from lower edge (35 stitches). Cast oh’. COLLAR. With No. 11 needles, cast on 111 stitches and work 30 rows in pattern. Cast off. RIBBING FOR FRONTS. With No. 11 needles and front of work facing, pick up and knit 169 stitches along left front. Work 10 rows in k 1, p 1 rib. Cast off in rib. Work a similar piece down right front, making 12 buttonholes thus: 4th Row: Rib U, * cast off 3, rib 10, repeat from * to last 7 stitches, cast off 3, rib 4. On sth row, cast on 3 to replace those cast off in previous row. Work 5 pore rows in rib; cast off.
TO MAKE UP. Do not press. Stitch yokes to fronts and. back. Sow up side, shoulder, and sleeve seams; insert sleeves, gathering fullness to top of shoulders. Stitch collar to neck edge. Wi.th No. 10 needles, pick up 21 stitches across top of pockets and work 1 inch in k 1, p 1 rib. Cast eff in rib. Stitch down pocket flaps neatly. Sew on buttons to match button holes.
