Mr and Mrs J. Ackerman, Lansdowne, have received word that their son, Darral, has successfully completed his course in Canada as Sergeant-Ob-server.
The actress Gracie Fields has departed by air on the first stage of a tour of America and the Empire, which will include Australia and New Zealand, a London cablegram states. The proceeds of her appearances will be devoted to patriotic funds. Mr A. E. Scarrow, Raetihi, after a preferential ballot, was selected as National candidate for the Waimarino electorate last night, at a meeting of delegates from the various branches in the electorate, held in Raetihi. A farmer, Mr Scarrow is the son of an old settler' in the Raetihi district. Mr Will Thomas, Timaru, was installed as district governor of the 53rd district (New Zealand) of Rotary International by the retiring district governor, Mr D. A. Ewen, Wellington, at a conference held in Wellington yesterday. There were some 60 presidents and secretaries' of clubs present. This is the second occasion on which Mr Thomas has held this position. The death of Major Frederick William Sandford, a former Scout Commissioner fox* New Zealand, occurred in New Plymouth on Monday at the age of 88, says a Press Association message. Major Sandford was prominent in the foundation of the Scout movement in the Dominion, and made two visits to Britain in charge of scouts going to jamborees.
