STATE THEATRE

A DOUBLE PROGRAMME.

An outstanding double programme will be presented at the State Theatre tonight. A crack limited roaring over ■die peak of the Rockies can capture the imagination, but when that San Francisco-bound train contains a potential killer, a key witness in a murder trial, a fast-talking detective, and a smart newspaper woman hot on “The Big Story,” then it provides sensation. These, roughly, are the ingredients that have been mixed together to make “Sleepers West,” the Michael Shayn.e detective film what has been reported to be an action-packed thriller. ’’Sleepers West,” is a detective story, but it is said to be a different sort of detective story because the character of Michael Shayne, played by Lloyd Nolan, is a different sort of detective. He is as quick with repartee as he is on the draw and he not only gels his man, but his woman, too. The associate picture is “Ride on Vaquero. Once more the fast-riding, soft-spoken Cisco Kid is played to perfection by Cesar Romero. He tangles with kidnappers this lime, and with a price on his head, it is not easy. Mary Beth Hughes is Cisco’s heart interest and she keeps him guessing. As an entertainer in the Crystal Palace Cafe, Mary Beth holds Cisco’s heart in her hand.’ They make an admirable couple. Chris-Pin Martin, Cisco’s inseparable sidekick, finds in dusky Ben “Shadrach” Carter an able foil for his broad humour.
