FEATHERSTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr J. ,W. Card) and. Councillors S. P. Batchelor, C. A. Farrier. W. J. Boston, C. R. Skipage. B. B. Donald. R. R. P. Hardy, H. W. Cundy and T. C. Hardie. An apology for absence was received from Cr. C. C. Kenward. The treasurer reported the following bank balances: District fund account, cr., £867 4s lid; cemetery account, cr., £77 8s 4d; domain account, cr., £lB Ils 6d; Mayor’s relief fund account, cr., £BO 14s 9d; water supply loan, 1936, account, cr., £172 13s 4d; library account, cr., £62 18s sd. The Carterton Racing Club wrote asking that September 13 be declared a holiday from 11 a.m.,-it being the day of the club’s annual meeting. The request was granted under the usual conditions.

E. A. O’Neale complained of wandering stock entering his property and causing damage. The ranger is to be asked to prosecute the offenders.

The Domain balance sheet was received from the Audit Office, being certified as correct.

The Treasury wrote wishing to know if the full loan of £3,200 had been raised for the Water Supply Loan, 1936. The clerk stated that he had replied in the affirmative.

The Minister of Railways wrote ■ in reply to the complaint in regard to blasting operations, stating that his officers had made inquiries and found that there was no reason for the complaint, as no metal was cause danger. A further letter has been forwarded to the Minister stating that two pieces of metal weighing over 21bs have been picked up in the cemetery and one of over Jib falling on the golf links while play was in progress. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that the Board had agreed to supply 2 stretchers and a first aid outfit for the use of the medical section of the E.P.S. It was decided to declare a half holiday on Thursday, October 30, being the “people's day” at the Carterton Show. Councillor Batchelor presented a framed photo of Gunner J, S. Viles, 2nd N.Z.E.F., who was a councillor before leaving on service. This is to be hung in the Council Chambers. Coum cillor Batchelor was thanked by the Council for his gift. Emergency Hospital. A meeting convened by Mrs G. S. Sharp, president of the sub-branch of the Red Cross Society, was held yesterday afternoon to arrange matters in connection with an emergency hospital. A very good response was received from those present and others who were unable to be present. A committee was appointed consisting of Miss Card, Mrs Q. Donald Senr., Mrs H. Clark, Mrs Geo. Yule, and Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford. Mrs Willett and Mrs Shepherd were appointed joint secretaries. It was decided to complete a roster of those who were willing io offer their services as V.A’s., cooks, kitchenmaids, wardmaids, etc. Twenty fullyequipped beds were offeree' by those present at the meeting. Social Gathering. A social gathering was held at Kahutara Hall on Thursday evening and was well attended. Dancing and games were indulged in and songs were given by Miss O. Stansell and the Rev. J. R. Higgs. A sketch entitled “Old Moore’s Almanac," was presented, the players being Mesdames J. R. Higgs. Brandon, Feast, and Miss B. Sharp and the Rev. J. R. Higgs. The Ladies’ Guild provided refreshments. The gathering was organised by the Rev. <l. R. Higgs. Personal Items. Constable H. McNamara has been appointed to take charge of the Featherston Police District in succession to Constable McLeod. Constable Howell. of Dannevirke, has been appointed second in charge. The following soldiers are home on leave:—Privates E. and M. McKenzie, .1 Mellish, J. Warrington, G. Hall, R. Binder, N. Hayes and Sergeant H. C. Pearce.
