CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Women's Institute met yesterday when Mrs A. Adams presided over a good attendance of members. The president referred to the loss sustained by Mrs J. Archer in the death of her brother. Members stood for a few moments in silence as an expression of sympathy. A letter was received from the A.N.A. Club thanking the members for the generous hamper forwarded. The Tourist Department wrote outlining “Group Travel” and the advantages to be gained thereby. It was decided to write for further particulars as it was hoped to arrange a tour under this scheme at a later date. 3 The President announced that Mrs W. A. Pinfold would in future be the representative of the Institute on the Patriotic Committee.
Miss V. Sorensen sang two songs which were much appreciated. She was presented with a dainty shoulder spray. Miss V. Irwin, the accompanist, received a posy of daphne. The competitions were judged by Mrs R. Brown and resulted as follows: Pikelets, Mrs A. Knutson 1, Mrs W. P. Williams 2, Mrs A. Adams 3; six paper flowers, Mrs M. J. Woods 1, Mrs W. Steven 2, Mrs E. Palmer 3; knitted article for the Forces, Mrs A. Adams 1, Mrs L. J. Loftus 2, Mrs H. J. Brown 3.
Mrs R. Brown was thanked and presented with a shoulder spray.
A competition for a mystery parcel was won by Miss Kathleen Williams. Mrs A. Marshall outlined the requirements in connection with the medical and public health section of the E.P.S.. Mrs Marshall referred to the splendid work of all V.A.D.’s in the New Zealand Base Hospitals in the last war. Mrs Adams, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs Marshal and presented her with a posy of violets. Forty-four squares were handed in, and Mesdames Adams, Pink, A. Knutson and W. Pinfold offered to sew the squares together. , A bring-and-buy stall did brisk business, every article being sold. Dance for Soldiers. On Monday evening a dance will be given in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, to men on leave from camp. It is anticipated that residents of the district will attend in large numbers. The patriotic committee has all the arrangements well in hand. The music for the dance will be played by Mrs V. J. Ashton's orchestra. i Hockey. The following is the Carterton senior men's team to play Wesley at Masterz ton at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday: A. Ward, G. Townsend, B. Bath, D. Irwin, M. Worsfold, A. Ordish, A. Sewell, D. Jackson. T. Hooper, A. Fisher, and R. Ordish. Cars will leave the -Post Office at 2 p.m. Social at Parkvale Hall. Tomorrow evening the settlers of Parkvale and the surrounding districts will tender a social gathering to Ptes. M. Rose and N. Walsh. The music for the dancing will be supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra and during the evening presentations will be made to the guests of honour. The ladies of the district will provide supper. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held' at Longbush at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs W. Abbott, of Feilding, were visitors to Carterton yesterday.
