SYRIA & LEBANON
BRITISH POLICY STATED AGAIN.
ASSURANCES TO GENERAL
DE GAULLE.
(British Official Wireless.) (Received' This Day, 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY, August 14
Captain Oliver Lyttelton, British War Cabinet member in the Middle East, has sent a message to General de Gaulle stating that he is happy to repeat that Britain has no interests in Syria and Lebanon except to win the war, without encroaching on the position of France. “Both countries,” he added, “have pledged the independence of Syria and Lebanon. We admit that France should have a predominant position in Syria and Lebanon.”
General de Gaulle replied expressing happiness at the renewed assurances. “Free France, that is France,” he said, “is resolved to pursue the war by the side of Britain until victory against the common enemies is assured.”
