APPEAL BOARD
CONCLUSION OF MASTERTON SITTING MEN FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE. ADJOURNMENTS & DISMISSALS. The hearing of appeals relating to s men called up for service overseas was concluded at yesterday’s sitting of the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Masterton. Mr W. F. Stilwell, S.M., presided and there were also present Messrs A. Parlane, J. W. G. Brodie and the Crown representative, Mr C. O. Bell.
A. B. D. Weatherstone appealed against the calling up of John R. A. Weatherstone, farm hand, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appellant pointed out that he did not want his son to back out of military service but could not replace him on the farm. The appeal was adjourned sine die, with the direction that the reservist continue serving in the Home Guard. On the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, R. W. Matthews, Western Lake, appealed for Freeman George Jackson, stud shepherd. MrS. R. Gawith, for appellant, said that Jackson was a key man in the maintenance of his Romney flock and that Mr Matthews had been unable to get a man to replace Jackson. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up until after December 31, 1941.
Heapy’s Limited appealed against the calling up of Ebenezer Ernest Gray, farm hand, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed, subject to ; the reservist not being called up prior \ to September 30, 1941. Ernest L. Gates appealed against the calling up of William Francis Gates, farm hand, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was adjourned sine die, to be reheard when the board sat in Masterton again. The Director of National Service appealed against the calling up of Jack Burkitt Rose, farm hand, on the grounds of public interest. Mr J. Macfarlane’Laing appeared for the reservist. Mr W. G. Laing, a trustee of the estate controlling the farm, gave evidence that the reservist was keen to serve but could not be replaced. In reply to Mr Bell, Laing said that Rose had been employed on the farm for 12 months. No actual steps had been taken in the last nine months, since the reservist had been called up, to replace him. The appeal was adjourned sine die. the appeal to be reviewed in four months' time.
D. J. MacAulay appealed on behalf of Angus George MacAulay, farmer, Carterton, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Mr S. V. Gooding appeared for appellant. The appeal was adjourned sine die, to be reviewed in four months’ time.
The application for postponement of service made by Ronald Hilton Madden. farmer, was for the perioud up to October 30, 1941, and not 1942 as was stated in yesterday's issue. The board agreed to postpone service accordingly.
