Sydney, N.S. —Broadbill swordfish to the amount of 2,296,000 pounds, the best catch in four years, were landed by Canadian swordfishermen during the season of 1940. The greater part of the catch is taken off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Practically all of this was exported to the United States, and was half a million pounds in excess of the 1939 catch. The swordfish are boxed individually in ice, after the swords and tails are removed, and are then transported in refrigerator cars. Apart from its value as a commercial fishery, the swordfish offers excellent sport for deep-sea anglers.
