CALM BEFORE STORM
SEEN BY SPOKESMAN IN TOKIO JAPANESE PRESS OUTCRY. AGAINST GUARANTEES TO THAILAND. (Received This Day. 10.25 a.m.) TOKIO. August 13. I A spokesman, Mr Hideo Hiraide, said to the Press today: “Now is not the time to fuss over whether Japan should enter the war. The present is merely the calm before the storm and the people must be prepared. The Japanese are peaceloving, but there is a limit to their patience, after which there will be an explosion.” Mr Hiraide warned opposing nations to avoid underestimating Japan’s strength, saying: “If they make that mistake they will be inviting unfortunate results.” The Japanese newspapers have warned Thailand not to accept AngloAmerican guarantees, because the nations which had done so were dead. The Press reiterated the chorus that Japan would not tolerate any Thailand submission to Britain. The “Nichi Nichi Shimbun” said it was for this reason that Thailand had declared her neutrality.
