BOBBY CALVES
SEASON'S MARKET PROSPECTS. Interviewed regarding market prospects for bobby calves this season, Mr W. A. Phillips, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Ltd., said that although the veal was not exportable and in consequence only the Government subsidy of 2s less costs or 8d net per calf was available at works for this important by-product, the market for the edible offal had not been disturbed, while that for skins was up to the present much better. Because of the comparative firmness of the skin market with that ruling at this time last year, Mr Phillips stated that for their July and August calves producers were assured of a much better return than was at first indicated by the Government's offer to purchase all calves for the season at 7s at works. This offer, it should be stated, was based on last season's average skin sales, but was declined by the industry in favour of taking the risk of the skin market which up to the present had proved to its advantage. “In view of the substantially increased quantity of rennet required by the cheese industry this season, it is gratifying to note,” concluded Mr Phillips, “that collections are well up to Nev Zealand’s last year's figures, but it would appear as compared with last year’s experience from the considerably higher percentage of calves which are being condemned that are unaware that the subsidy is being lost on such calves and that in all other respects it is just as important this year as in previous years to feed their calves and turn them off in the best condition possible.”
