CARTERTON

SOLDIER HONOURED CARRINGTON GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Carrington settlers on Saturday evening entertained Pte. D. Miller, son of Mr and Mrs Chas. Miller, very old and respected settlers of Carrington, at a social gathering in the Carrington Schoolroon,', which was filled. Music for the dancing <was played by Mrs Clark and Mr Joe Parker. During the evening Mr Eric L. Rayner, in an appropriate speech, on behalf of the settlers, asked Pte. Miller to accept a wristlet watch. Pte. Miller suitably returned thanks for the gift, and the gathering provided in his honour. Supper was then handed round, and dancing continued till midnight. OBITUARY MR CHARLES NICHOLSON. After an illness extending over several months, there passed away at the Greytown Hospital on Sunday morning, a highly respected resident of Carterton in the person of Mr Charles Nicholson. Born in 1865 at Blair Drummond, Perthshire, Scotland, he came to New Zealand when 14 years of age. When he went to work he was employed as a surveyor, and carried on this occupation for many years. He lived in several parts of New Zealand, arid was resident at Woodville, Kaitangata and Petone. During the past ten years he had lived with his daughter in Carterton. Deceased took a keen interest in bowling, being a member of the Carterton Club at the time of his death. Previous to coming to Carterton he was associated with Woodville and Petone Bowling Clubs. At Woodville he was for a long time caretaker of the ladies’ croquet lawns. In his early days he was a keen rifle and gun shot, having won many trophies. In Woodville he was a member of the Presbyterian Church choir. During his residence at Petone he was made a life member of the Working Men’s Club in that town. His wife predeceased him 28 years ago. He is survived by two brothers, Messrs William Nicholson, of Taumarunui, John Nicholson, of Timaru, and three sisters, Mrs Bentley (Dunedin), Mrs Wingate Patterson, and Miss Nicholson, of Lower Hutt, and a daughter, Mrs Eric Walker, of Tyne Street, Carterton, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A grandson, Pte. Rex Walker, is with the New Zealand Forces overseas. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the residence of his daughter, Mrs Walker, Tyne Street, at 1.30 p.m., for the Clareville Cemetery. , GOLF CLUB COMPETITIONS.
