MR MENZIES RETURNS TO MELBOURNE IN READINESS FOR CABINET MEETING. SIR F. STEWART WARNS JAPAN. LONDON, August 10. The growing tension in the Pacific has compelled the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, to cancel the remainder of his tour of Australia and return to Melbourne tonight for -2 special meeting of Cabinet tomorrow. This is in accordance with the warning given by Mr Menzies that Cabinet Ministers should stand by in readiness for any emergency. A, further warning to Japan was given today by Sir Frederick Stewart, Minister of External Affairs. He said that Japan was using the pretext of encirclement to justify her occupation cf bases in French Indo-China and expand her influence in Thailand. He added -that Japan must know that the only encirclement she had to fear was a combination of those countries which felt themselves threatened by Japanese aggression. The responsibility for raising such a combination was Japan’s own.
