WAIRARAPA GUN CLUB

SPARROW CONTESTS. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. In fine weather and conditions suitable to shooting, the Wairarapa Gun Club held a sparrow shooting championship, A and B grades. The shooting was of a high standard. The executive and the club’s capable secretary, Mr M. Kiddie, worked hard and everything went off smoothly. The following were the results:— A grade, 21 yard rise. 21 birds: J. D. McKenzie, 19 birds, 1; C. E. Grey, 17 birds, 2; W. H. Saunders and Laird Meredith, 16 each; H. H. Morris, J. S. Morrison, 15 each; F. H. Taplin, D. S. McKenzie, J. W. McKenzie, 14. Shooting in this grade was of a very good standard, particularly that of the winner, who missed only two birds, his eleventh and twentieth. C. E. Grey, the runner up, dropped four birds, these being the eighth, sixteenth, eighteenth and twentieth. Apart from the birds missed, McKenzie used his second barrel five times, and Grey twice only. B grade, 16 yard rise, 21 birds: A well deserved and very popular win was scored by Jack Crawford, who shot 16 birds. This was his first attempt at a championship, being a firstyear shooter, which made his performance all the more creditable. He struck rather a bad patch at the start of the match, missing three out of his first five birds, but after this he gained confidence, shooting thirteen birds in succession, then missing two out of the last three. S. M. Baird and A. McKay also shot .well to get 15 birds each. In the 5-bird shoot off to decide the runner up, Baird shot his five birds and McKay four. H. J. Bannister and O. Hurney tied for fourth place with 14 birds each. After the championships a 3-bird match was fired. C. E. Grey, L. Meredith, H. Bannister, J. D. McKenzie, J. W. McKenzie and D. S. McKenzie all shot three birds. These shooters shot off on the first miss out principle. D. S. McKenzie proved the winner with L. Meredith second. McKenzie won on the ninth bird.
