MASTERTON BRANCH. ENJOYABLE MEETING. An “at home” meeting was held at the residence of Mrs M. Jackson, Cole Street, Masterton, Miss Tankersley being in the chair. Several apologies for absence were received. Mrs Jansen led devotions.
It was gratifying to members to learn that over 800 signatures had been obtained in Masterton and other parts of the district to the petition requesting that the liquor laws be more strictly enforced. Miss Tankersley thanked all who had taken part in this work during the past few weeks.
Items of interest were given by members concerning social evils. The Temperance 'fact was read by the secretary as follows: The late Viscount Snowden, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, condemned the revenue taken from intoxicants saying, “It violates all recognised canons of taxation. It does not tax a man according to his means but on his vices.” Much appreciated afternoon tea was handed round by the hostesses, Mrs Jamieson and Miss Jackson, who were accorded a vote of thanks, as was Mrs H. Speight for her songs. The meeting was a most enjoyable one.
