RAIL CAR TRAFFIC

ACCOMMODATION ON SUNDAY NIGHTS. CONGESTION STILL APPARENT. Difficulty is still being experienced in finding accommodation for passenger traffic from the Wairarapa to Wellington by rail-car on Sunday evenings. This is in spite of the fact that four of the six rail-cars now engaged on the Wellington-Wairarapa line are now scheduled to run from the Wairarapa to Wellington on Sunday evenings. Each one carries about 55 passengers. Mr J. Robertson, member for Masterton, who has been looking into the position, said this morning that he wished to correct any suggestion that soldiers were not allowed to reserve their seats because they were travelling with a privilege ticket. Such was not the case. It was purely a question of priority of booking and no discrimination could be made between civilian and soldier. The trouble was that civilians were able to book seats days in advance, whereas a soldier did not know until the last minute that he would be on leave. Mr Robertson suggested that if the military authorities could give some assistance the difficulty might be overcome —for instance, by extending the men’s leave until the Monday morning or if they could advise the Railways Department beforehand how many men would be on leave.
