Professor C. E. Hercus has been appointed a member of the Medical Council. The death has occurred of the noted Indian poet. Sir Rabindranath Tagore, at the age of 80 years. Mr J. Murray, Wellington, has been appointed a member of the National War Funds Council, in place of the late Sir Charles Luke. Major N. C. Speight, Auckland, has been promoted to lieutenant-colonel and appointed to command the Sixth Field Ambulance temporarily. At the annual meeting of the Masterton Racing Club last evening it was decided to send a letter to Mr G. W. Sellar, expressing the club’s sympathy in his illness, and wishing him a speedy recovery. The engagement is announced of Constance Margaret, only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Lambert, Coradine Street, Masterton, to Leslie Douglas, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Douglas McLachlan, “Reef Hill,” Masterton. The post of Dominion secretary and treasurer of the Plunket Society has been filled by the appointment of Mrs E. R. Batchelor, Christchurch. Mrs Batchelor has been secretary to the rector and professorial board of Canterbury University College and secre-tary-accountant at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. The Labour Party, subject to endorsement by the national executive, has chosen Mr R. A. Grace as its candidate fox' the Waikato seat in the next general election. Mi' Grace has farmed for many years at Mangapiko. He is a member' of the Auckland Land Board and was at one time president of the Te Awamutu branch of the Labour Party. The sitting member for Waikato is Mr W. S. Goosman, Morrinsville, who defeated the Labour candidate, Mr J. W. Neate, Ngatea, at the last election. Mi' J. W. Neate has been chosen as the Labour candidate for the Waitomo seat. Mr W. J. Broadfoot, present member for Waitomo, will again stand in the National Party’s interests.
