ALLEGED MURDER

DEATH OF WAITOTARA STOREKEEPER MAORI ARRESTED & CHARGED IN PATEA. REMANDED TO WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. Before a packed Court, those present including many Maoris, Tipi Katene, a native, was charged before Justices in Paica today with the murder on August 4 of Arthur Harding Parkinson, a 79-year-old Waitotara storekeeper. Detective T. W. Allsop asked for a remand to Wellington on August 14. Mi- S. G. Cathro (Patea) appeared for Katene and consented to the remand. He asked the Court to make an order that, following on the remand to Wellington. Katene should be remanded to appear in Wanganui, where counsel would have access to him. The Court, Messrs E. F. Hemingway and W. F. Shield, said it was not prepared to make such an order, and remanded Katene to Wellington on August 14. Katene was taken to Wellington today, being escorted by Constables J. R. C. Smith (Patea) and L. Gordon (Eltham). Detectives J. Murray and Allsop, who arrested Katene 36 hours after the investigation started, are remaining in Patea to make further inquiries. Katene, who is 28 years of age, is a married man. with two children. The detectives found him in a billiard saloon and asked him to go to the Police Station, where the arrest was made.
