WAITOTARA TRAGEDY
SHOPKEEPER’S DEATH MAORI ARRESTED IN PATEA. FOLLOWING WIDESPREAD POLICE INQUIRIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) . WANGANUI. August G. A Maori, married, aged 27, and a resident of the Waitotara district, was arrested tonight in Patea in connection with the death of Arthur Harding Parkinson, 78-year-old Waitotara storekeeper, who was found dead in his shop yesterday. A blood-stained axe and a mallet were found near the body, and there was a large pool of blood in a passage close to where the body was discovered. The arrest was made by Detective T. Murray, Wanganui, and Detective T. W. Allsop, Hawera, less than 36 hours after widespread police inquiries were started. The arrested man will appear in the Magistrates’ Court in Palea at 10 a.m. tomorrow when, it is understood, a remand to Wellington will be sought. .<
