RAISING SEEDS
USEFUL HINTS. It is essential to sow all seeds thinly: crowded seedlings will never make good plants, not even if they are transplanted as early as possible. To assist the even distribution of very small seeds such as begonias and gloxinias, a small funnel made of smooth paper is of great advantage. If seeds are placed in this funnel and mixed with a very little fine sand, it is not difficult to regulate the distribution over the whole surface of the box. The depth of covering required naturally depends on the size of the seeds, but, as most of the greenhouse seeds are small, the merest sprinkle is all that is required. Shading should not prove necessary so early in the season, but during periods of bright sunshine it may be best to cover with paper.
