ALFREDTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs Hull presided. The time was spent in sewing warm clothing for refugees. To mark the eleventh birthday of the Institute, a birthday cake is to be made by Mrs E. Seymour and iced by Mrs Dickens. The ingredients are to be donated by members. The cake is to be raffled and the proceeds are to be used for the purchase of soldiers’ Christmas parcels. The competitions were judged by Mrs J. Spring and Mrs A. Lessels, and resulted as follows: —Biscuits, packed in tin for over Seas: Mrs T. Smith, 1; Miss B. Napier, 2; Mrs Dickens, 3. Gingernuts: Mrs G. Yarrell, 1 and 2; Mrs Seymour, 3. Pullovers: Mrs C. Low, 1; Mrs Dickens, 2. Balaclava: Mrs C. Low. 1; Mrs Dickens. 2. Scarf: Mrs C. Low, 1; Mrs McLean, 2. Mittens: Mrs Dickens, 1; Mrs Yarrall, 2; Mrs Rolls, 3. Best bloom for the month: Mrs Seymour, 1. 2, and 3. The hostesses were Mrs Rolls and Miss Hare. Dance Postponed. It has been decided to postpone the dance which was to have been held on August 7 in aid of school funds, on account of sickness in the district.
