PIRINOA
GOLF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weather was fine on Saturday for the first of the eliminating rounds in the Pirinoa Golf Club championships. In the senior championship some close finishes were witnessed, although the play on the whole was not up to the usual standard. No excuse could be offered for the display of some of the players. This, of course, does not detract from the win of G. Sutherland, who played consistently throughout. S. Thomas again showed good form by defeating M. Herangi. The greens and fairways were in splendid order despite the bad weather during the greater part of the week. The following were the results: —G. Sutherland beat J. Riwai; T. Hume beat M. Waiwera; S. Thomas beat M. Herangi. There was only one match played in the junior championship, S. Hall beating H. Matakatea. F. Lovegrove and R. Lovegrove defaulted to J. Carter and N. Hume, respectively. The inter-club match between Pirinoa and Rototawai will be played at the weekend.
GREEN AND GOLD BALL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Green and Gold Ball Committee met at the weekend when several matters relating to the function to be held on Wednesday, September 3, were dealt with. A queen contest will be conducted in connection with the ball, and the crowning ceremony on the night of the ball should be of a spectacular character. A first-class orchestra has been engaged, and Mrs Thompson, of Dannevirke, will supervise the decorations and supper arrangements. The net proceeds will be handed to the patriotic fund. Last year the Green and Gold Balls held under the auspices of the Mutual Improvement Association throughout New Zealand contributed to various patriotic funds a sum reaching four figures. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SUCCESSFUL DANCE. There was a large attendance at the dance held by the Women’s Institute on Saturday evening. The 'Cosmopolitan Band supplied the music and Mr S. Mclntosh was M.C. ..The prizes in the euchre tournament were won by Mrs Herangi and K. Waiwera, while other prizes were won by Mesdames Sutherland and Seaward (chocolates), Mr and Mrs Herangi (Monte Carlo dance), and Mr Teurata (dinner). Personal Items. Mr W. Charteris, who underwent an operation in a private hospital in Featherston, has returned home. Miss Joan Lovegrove, who has been assistant at the local post office for some years, has received notification of her transfer on promotion to the Khandallah office, where she will take charge. Miss Lovegrove will be greatly missed in the district as she was a very popular and efficient officer. She also took a leading part in various social activities in the district. Miss K. Te Maari, of the staff of the Pukeora Sanatorium, has been visiting relatives here. Mr R. Te Whaiti was a visitor to Wellington for a few days. Mr Russell Lovegrove, who had been confined to his bed for some time, has entered the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Mr Andrew Simeon has returned to Feilding. Mrs Bragg is staying in Masterton while her son is in the Masterton Hospital. Donation to Seamen’s Fund.
