WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT. SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS DURING YEAR. The following is the annual report of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club for the year ended June 30, and which is signed by the president, Mr J. w. Card:—The summer and autumn meetings passed off successfully, although with somewhat lesser profits than the preceding year. For the New Year meeting we introduced the win and place system of betting, but reverted to the single pool at the Easter meeting. Experience shows that the former system, to be successful, requires larger fields than we are accustomed to have at Tauherenikau. The gross totalisator investments for the year were £70,800, as against £70,138 for the preceding year. The small increase was not sufficient to' set off the increase (£435) of stakes given during the year. After writing off depreciation, £1064 14s, we made a loss over., all operations of £1587 13s 9d. The loss on the previous year was £1029 12s 6d. Notwithstanding, however, the above loss, our contribution to the New Zealand Government War Loan, 1953, was £330. The course was used as a school of instruction for the Army until December 1 last, and although not occupied since then it is being held in reserve for Army purposes. The floods occurring early in May threatened our river defence work, in fact, made some considerable erosion. The course committee acted quickly and had a new apron and groyne erected on the danger spot and the willows wired back, a work which we expect will be effective. In consequence of the new Rules of Racing requiring that all wire should be removed from the fences around the course, we could no longer keep sheep for grazing purposes, and therefore all stock has been sold. All the buildings and property generally of the club are in good order. During the year roads and paths were metalled, and hot water systems installed in three publicans’ booths. Owing to petrol restrictions the monthly meetings of stewards were 1 made bi-monthly; the attendance show, ed that the stewards were maintaining their interest in the club’s affairs.
You will be required to elect the usual officers and six stewards. The retiring officers are: —Patron, Mr Thos. Benton; president, Mr J. W. Card; vice-presidents, three required, Messrs A. C. Pearce, D. H. S. Riddiford and D. C. Collins; honorary judge, Mr C. J. Nix; honorary treasurer, .Mr H. Lawson; honorary time-keeper, Mr D. C. . n.; ..unorary surgeons, Drs. G. S. Sharpe, T. D. M. Stout and J. M. Coutts; veterinary surgeon, Mr S. Fletcher; auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and L. H. Smart; stewards, Messrs R. N. Barton, D. Cameron, J. G. Donald, E. D. Martin, E. R. W. Bidwill and Percy Tilson. The annual meeting of members will be held in Featherston on Thursday, August 21, at 2 p.m.
