CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES OF THE MONTH. FAVOURABLE REPORT MADE BY INSPECTORS. The Masterton Central School Committee held its monthly meeting in the school last evening there being present Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell (chairman), P. Shaw, W. R. Nicol, A. V. Dixon, J. H. Cole, A, J. Gibbs, C. J. Braggins, A. E. Nelson and the Headmaster (Mr E. G. Coddington). Accounts amounting to £2l 8s 9d were passed. Improvements to the East School grounds and the library subsidy were discussed.
The Headmaster read his monthly report. This showed a slight increase in the roll number, which is now 586. Mumps and other minor illnesses are still prevalent and though the attendance is higher than it has been it is still not up to normal. A surprise visit by the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade to try out the means of evacuating the buildings in case of emergency resulted in the children being all clear of the buildings in 1 minute 5 seconds from the alarm. The children were then seen assembled according to zone (each under a teacher), and with messenger, first aid and cooking squads (also under special teachers) all ready for any emergency. The Superintendent expressed his pleasure at the turnout.
In connection with the victory campaign each room had drawn and painted a V poster for the wall and some excellent posters had been produced. Eight hundred pounds of waste paper had been collected to date.
Children had been urged to join the savings campaign and a considerable number had responded. These practical methods of showing patriotism were to be commended. The four school inspectors had visited the school on July 14 and 15, and had inspected the work of the school. The report spoke in terms of praise of all departments. The fine attitude of the pupils toward their work and the order, tone and discipline of the school were spoken o? highly. The chairman congratulated the Headmaster on his report. Mr Nicol moved and Mr Nelson seconded that the Headmaster and the staff be congratulated upon the very fine report on the work of the school. This was carried and the Headmaster was asked to convey the feelings of the committee to the staff. Arbour Daj r arrangements were discussed and it was reported that the East School had held a very successful function during the month. Permission was given for Standard 3 to use the hall for a party on. Wednesday, so that parents of these pupils could see certain aspects of their work demonstrated. The Y.M.C.A. were permitted to use the school facilities to provide tea for troops on weekend manoeuvres.
