FISHPLATES ON LINE
PLACED BY BORSTAL ESCAPEES. STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF RAILWAYS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) . WELLINGTON, This Day. With reference to the Dunedin report, that several iron fishplates had been placed across the main railway line between Balclutha and Kakapuaka on Sunday, making additional precautions necessary for the safe passme of expresses using the line, the Minister of Railways (Mr Semple) said today that his Department had made inquiries which showed that two lads, who had escaped from a Borstal institution, were travelling south along the railway line and, under the impression that they would probably be pursued by officials on velocipedes, had put two or three fishplates on the rail with a view to delaying pursuit. The obstacles were removed and the lads were taken into custody. The line was patrolled further to ensure that no ether obstacles had been placed on the track. Mr Semple said he made this statement in order to assure the public that there was no ground for thinking it was an ordinary act of sabotage, carried out by some person resident in the locality with a view to derailing express trains. ’
