OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

PETROL RESELLERS (To the Editor) Sir—There are a few questions I would like to ask the powers that be through the medium of your paper. Is the Government going to compensate the petrol resellers for the loss of business imposed by restrictions of trade? If so, how and when? These men are mostly elderly and through thrift and working long hours have invested their all in the’-a places and now stand to lose everyth-ng. This is a measure for the good of the whole Dominion and for one section to carry the whole of the loss is not fair or just. The regulations have already brought the resellers to the breaking point (some have broken) and this added cut will finish the rest.

The following methods of relief would be the easiest and simplest: — The maximum profit was 3d per gallon on a full gallonage. To equal this on a loss of 70 per cent of trade would require at least 2s per gallon increase. A direct subsidy to the reseller paid on a basis of gallonage sold. Purchase of all petrol stations at a fair valuation on pre-war figures and run the whole business —losses to be a charge on Consolidated Fund. —I am, etc., RESELLER. Masterton, August. 5.
