DANCE AND CARD PARTY PATRIOTIC EFFORT AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday night, despite the unfavourable weather conditions, the fortnightly patriotic dance and card party, held in the Parkvale Hall, was a decided success. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs V. J .Ashton’s orchestra, an extra being played by Mr Tawhai. Mr V. J. Ashton acted as M.C. The euchre tournament resulted: —Ladies, Mrs C. K. Goodin 1, Mrs P. Andrews 2. Men’s section: Mr C. Howie 1, Mr D. W. Guy 2. Mi- Howie donated his prize for a future tournament.

A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr G. Burden and Miss B. Cadwallader. A dinner kindly donated by Mrs Les. Rayner was won by Mr D. W. Guy. After expenses were met, a credit balance of £7 was shown, which brings the committee’s effort for patriotic purposes up to over £5O. Another party will be held on August 16. LANCE CORPORAL A. R. STEFFERT NOW REPORTED PRISONER OF WAR. Some time ago the parents of LanceCorporal A. R. Steffert were advised that their son had succumbed to wounds received in the Battle for Crete, but last evening the following official statement was received by Mrs Steffert: “I have the greatest pleasure in informing you that a further cable from Headquarters, Middle East, reports that your son, 21255 Lance-Cor-; poral Arthur Robert Steffert, is now a prisoner of war in a hospital in Greece, and had not died of wounds as previously advised. The relief that you will feel .’at this good news is shared by the Prime Minister and the Government who regret that you should have suffered grief and sorrow as result of previous notice. F. Jones, Minister of Defence.” GOLF MEN’S MATCH. The annual President’s v Captain’s team match played on the Carterton links on Saturday ended in a win for the Captain’s team by 8 games to 6 with 3 halved. The results of the games are as follow, the President’s team being mentioned first in each instance:—Brown beat Smart, Pankhurst lost to Goodin, Dudson beat Booth. Fisher beat Steel, Taylor squared with Harrington, Hughes squared with Nicholls, Hart beat Clarke. Whitburn beat Roydliousc,'’Riggs lost to Tavener. Gustof.sen lost to Colson, Candy lost to Lawrence, Hill lost to Nix, Knutson lost to Dwane, Jackson all square with M. Knowles, Callender lost to Court, W. Knowles lost to Broadbent, G. Pankhurst beat Rogers. In connection with the ladies’ competition the following were the scores handed in on Saturday: Mrs Candy 89-17-72; Mrs Murray 92-19-73; Mrs Colson 91-17-74; Mrs Harrington 91-17-74; Mrs Johansen 96-20-76; Miss Berrill 93-16-77; Miss I. Corlett 103-25-78; Miss B. Peters 109-31-78. Mrs Candy is the winner of the trophy. Dairy Factories to Open This Week. Four dairy factories in this district will commence the current season s operations this week. Dalefield, Parkvale and Waihakeke will open on Tuesday, and Belvedere on Thursday. All factories have prepared for an extra output this year. Carterton Football Club’s Ball. The annual ball of the Carterton Football Club will be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, tonight. There is sure to be a large attendance, as the club's fixture is always looked forward to. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the music, and the supper will be under the supervision of a strong ladies’ committee, who are sparing no pains to make it a feature of the gathering. The hall has been tastefully decorated, and special attention has been given to the floor, which should be in first-class order. The prices of admission are: 6s (double), men 4s, and ladies 2s 6d. A free bus will leave Masterton at 7.45 p.m. ■ Personal Items. Mr Hugh Keltie has received information from the Minister of Defence that his son, Pte. Harry Keltie, is a prisoner of war in a hospital in Greece. Mrs J. B. Brickell, Kent St., Carterton, has received a message from her son, Pte. Alan Brickell, from Nish, Yugoslavia, stating that he is a prisoner of war and is in good health.
