CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE TO BALLY BRIT. A WIN FOR ST. CLOUD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 3. Performances by National and Winter Cup horses featured the annual race meeting of the Christchurch Hunt Club held on the Riccarton course on Saturday. The Homeby Steeplechase was won by Ballybrit, the Longbeach Hurdles by Tidewaiter, and the Brabazon Handicap by St. Cloud, all three winners staging encouraging trials for the bigger events next week. A feature of the racing over the steeplechase country was the good jumping of all the runners. To a large extent this is attributed to the new idea of having a low rail in front of each fence, which gives a horse better sight of the obstacle. The North Island was well represented but- Tidewaiter and Silver Ball were the only winners. Dozie Boy, however, was very unlucky to fall when assured of second position in the Homeby Steeplechase. His rider, F. E. Baker, Auckland, was taken to the Christchurch Hospital for observation.

The weather was fine but overcast and cold, and the track soft from rain during the week. The attendance was large and the totalisator turnover for the day, £22,100 was £2089 10s higher than last year. Considering that the two runners in the Hunt Cup drew only £77 from the pockets of punters this was a good result. Results: —
