NOW ACCEPTED

THE JAPANESE APOLOGY

TO U.S.A.

BOMBING OF THE TUTUILA.

FULL INDEMNITIES PROMISED.

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)

WASHINGTON. August 1

The Assistant Secretary of State, Mr Welles, announced that Japan had premised an investigation of the bombing of the United States gunboat Tutuila at Chungking and full indemnities. The incident was now closed. The .Japanese Ambassador, Admiral Nomura, had expressed official regrets and given an assurance that all precautions would be taken against a repetition of the incident.

The Tokio correspondent of the Associated Press of America reports that the Japanese Foreign Minister, ViceAdmiral Toyoda, offered his apologies and expressed regret to the United States Ambassador, Mr Grew. The • seriousness with which the bombing of the Tutuila was viewed in Tokio was indicated by the fact that the Japanese Government imposed a blanket ban on messages regarding the incident for many hours. This was lifted only after Mr Grew had protested three times and telephoned Washington asking that an uncensored account be issued there.
