THE FAR EAST
CONSERVATIONS IN TOKIO & VICHY MARSHAL PETAIN’S REPORTED / ASSURANCE. JAPAN FEELING ECONOMIC STRAIN. (By Telegraph-J-Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. August 1. The Far Eastern situation has been the subject of .conversations in Tokio and Vichy. In Vichy, Marshal Petain is said to have given Admiral Leahy, United States Ambassador, an assurance that the Vichy Government would retain its independence in Africa. This question arose from events in the Far East. In Tokio the Japanese Ambassador to Great Britain (Mr. Shigemitso) had a two-hour conversation with the Prime Minister, Prince Konoye. The Japanese Ambassador left London in June to confer with his Government, and is expected to return when the conversations have been completed. Japan is reported to be already feeling the economic blockade to which she is exposing herself. Owing to a shortage of petrol for the Japanese fishing fleet, fish supplies have been halved and in Tokio vegetable supplies are almost halved.
