Y.M.C.A. Card Party.

At the fortnightly card party conducted by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., an enjoyable time was spent. The winners of the 500 were Mrs McGrath and Mrs Lewis. The next party will be held on August 14. Found Hanging.

Mr F. R. C. Waller, farmer, of Himatangi, and an ex-racehorse owner, was found hanging in a plantation at the rear of his home at Himatangi yesterday. At the inquest a verdict was returned that Waller had met his death by hanging, while in a state of mental depression.

Two Sons Killed. The fact that Mr G. L. Marshal], of Marton, a director of the New Zealand Farmers' Fertiliser Company, had been advised that another son, the second, had .been killed in action was mentioned at the annual meeting of the company at Auckland yesterday. The chairman, Mr S. I. Crookes, said that Mr Marshall had eight sons, six being on active service. , Link With the Past.

Among the papers handed in to the Waste Paper Depot in Masterton yesterday was a blacksmith’s day book, containing entries for the years from 1865 to 1871. Although the book was baled up with other material, it was interesting, on a casual inspection, to compare the prices of those days with the present. The names of many Masterton and district early settlers also appeared on its pages.

Old Folks’ Association. The official opening of the club-room of the Old Folks’ Association toqk place the other day at New Plymouth, the founder of the movement, Mr A. H. Vile (formerly of Masterton) presiding. Mr F. L. Frost, M.P., said he believed the movement would spread rapidly and become one of the most powerful organisations for good that could be found in the Dominion. In a short time the association should have a Dominion membership of 100,000, making it the strongest organisation of a social character in New Zealand. Mr Vile said there was every indication of branches being formed throughout the Dominion.
