BRITISH LABOUR

9 CO-OPERATION WITH SOVIET WARMLY WELCOMED HOPES OF FULL COMMON UNDERSTANDING. ATTITUDE TO COMMUNISTS IN BRITAIN. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) RUGBY. July 31. In a joint statement, the British Trade Union Congress and the Labour Party place on record their warm appreciation of the great efforts of the Soviet Union in the common struggle against Hitlerism, and welcome the fullness of co-op-eration which has developed between Great Britain and the Soviet Union. They affirm their conviction that the growth of this cooperation will result in the overthrow of Hitlerism and the achievement of the common understanding between their peoples which is a necessary condition of enduring peace. The statement then deals with a suggestion which has been made that common action should be taken by the Trade Union Congress, the Labour Party and the Communist Party of Great. Britain. Saying that the suggestion has been given careful consideration, the statement reviews the actions of the Communist Party in Britain since the outbreak of war and comes to the conclusion that, by reason of the unstable and irresponsible character of the party, the policy of which has never been determined by democratic means, there’is nothing in the situation which justifies the collaboration asked for.
