TERRIFIC STRAIN

ENDURED BV BOTH ARMIES' IN RUSSIA SOME NAZI ADMISSIONS. GIGANTIC SOVIET RESERVES. LONDON, July 31. Neutrals in Europe envisage the possibility of one side or the other in the German-Russian campaign collapsing from sheer physical exhaustion, reports the correspondent of “The Times” on the German frontier. He quotes the German newspaper “Deutsche Allgemaine Zeitung” as saying that the battlefront is at least six times the size of that between the Channel and the Meuse on the Western Front last year, and that it overshadows anything and everything in the /■ list war. The newspaper asserted that militarily the climax of the struggle against Russia has passed, but it pointed out that victory over Russia will not be followed with the same results as in France, because Russia has intact reserves which the German military authorities believe to be gigantic. The Germans admit that their frontline troops are feeling the strain of the prolonged effort. Some confess that the limits of endurance have been reached, and the men scarcely hope for relief because of the vast extent of the battlefield. NAZI TRICK BROADCAST OF MACHINE-GUN FIRE. LONDON, July 31. Moscow radio today described a German trick of broadcasting machinegun fire on the Eastern Front. Russians were counter-attacking in a wood when machine-guns clattered out seemingly from behind every tree. The Russians did not dare to attack but sent out patrols, which found loud-speakers suspended from the trees and a microphone near a machine-gun. The Russians then attacked and wiped out a German detachment.
