ARCTIC PORTS
ATTACKED BY FLEET AIR ARM GREAT DAMAGE AT PETSAMO & KIRKENAES. NAZI WARSHIP & SUPPLY VESSELS BOMBED. LONDON, July 31. Aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm yesterday successfully attacked the two German-occupied Arctic ports of Kirkenaes (Norway) and Petsamo (Finland). * An Admiralty communique states that at Kirkenaes the German warship Brenza, of 1460 tons, which was used as a training ship, was twice hit. Four supply ships were also hit by bombs. Three Messerschmitt 109’s and a Junkers 87 Were shot down during these operations. Strong opposition from the enemy made it impossible to observe all the results of the bombing. At Petsamo little shipping was found and the attack was concentrated against the harbour works. Heavy anti-aircraft fire was encountered. Bombs were rained on the jetties and oil tanks and great damage was done to the port facilities. Sixteen naval. aircraft are missing ’from these operations. 'C The German radio stated that British torpedo-carrying planes, under an escort of fighters, took off from an aircraft-carrier in the Arctic Sea and attacked a north Norwegian port. The attack coincided with a Soviet raid on northern Norway. It is understood in London that Russian planes also attacked Kirkenaes. Petsamo, which is used by the Ger-mans-to supply the army on the Murmansk sector, Was formally blockaded by Britain a few days before the invasion of Russia.
