AXIS OIL SUPPLIES
INDICATIONS OF SERIOUS SHORTAGE ITALIAN SHIPS RUN BLOCKADE IN MEDITERRANEAN. FOLLOWING ON FAILURE LAST MONTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m. LONDON, July 31. After running the Mediterranean blockade, two Italian tankers, the Alvaro and Mayo, arrived in the Bosphorus. after which they immediately sailed for Varna, under German air escort.
The “Daily Telegraph’s” Istanbul correspondent says the risks taken by these ships recall‘the failure of a similar attempt last month, when a British submarine smashed an Italian convoy and the Strombo took refuge in Istanbul. These facts suggest that Axis oil stocks are being drained desperately low and must be increased at whatever risk. The fact that the Alvaro and Mayo are proceeding to Varna, instead of Constanta, is believed to corroborate a Russian statement that Constanta harbour is utterly unusable and also that the Ploesti oilfields have been wrecked and Rumanian communications seriously dislocated.
